The project.
A new three-storey block has been delivered and completed for Maidstone Girls Grammar School (MGGS), providing general teaching spaces, specialist science classrooms, and music-adapted classrooms.
The building supports Maidstone Girls Grammar School’s science department by providing more practical teaching spaces, while enabling the music department to practise in specialist facilities. Features also include a visitor centre that provides easy access to the World War II tunnels below the reception area, helping preserve and protect the wartime history.
The Design
The well-thought-through design has improved the building’s efficiency through strategies such as maximised daylight with carefully planned window designs and specified LED lighting, including daylight dimming and absence-sensing controls.
Our role was to monitor the quality of the works while ensuring the building was delivered to the specified standard.
The site did bring its own challenges, as it sits 15m from a Network Rail boundary, beside an unstable embankment. Operations also had to run within a live school environment around exams and school traffic. Despite this, the building was completed 5 weeks early and ready for students at the start of the January term.
