At b&m, we are passionate about investing in the next generation of construction professionals, and recently we had the pleasure of delivering a Quantity Surveying masterclass to T Level Year 2 and Foundation to T Level students, at Bradford College.

Led by Mark Fennell, the session was designed to give students a meaningful, real-world insight into the profession and the opportunities it offers. Mark began by sharing his own journey into the construction industry, offering an honest and relatable perspective on how careers can evolve over time. This personal approach reflects our People First ethos, recognising that every career path is unique and shaped by experience, curiosity and growth.

The masterclass then explored the role of the Quantity Surveyor, breaking down the key responsibilities involved in managing costs, contracts and successful project delivery. Students gained a clear understanding of how Quantity Surveyors play a critical role throughout the lifecycle of a project, helping to ensure value for money while supporting collaboration across the wider project team.

We also shared insight into B&M’s journey as a business, the sectors we operate in, and how the profession has evolved alongside the changing demands of the built environment. This reflects our commitment to Growth and Expertise; continually learning, adapting and leading within our field.

A highlight of the session was a “day in the life” walkthrough, where Mark brought the role to life by exploring the practical tasks, decisions and challenges faced by Quantity Surveyors on a daily basis. This gave students a tangible understanding of the skills required, from communication and problem-solving to commercial awareness and teamwork.

The session concluded with an overview of career pathways into the profession, followed by an engaging Q&A. It was fantastic to see such high levels of participation, with students asking thoughtful and insightful questions that demonstrated genuine interest in the industry.

At b&m, we believe that collaboration between education and industry is essential in shaping a stronger future for the built environment. Opportunities like this not only support learning but also help students to see themselves within the industry. Something we are incredibly proud to be part of.

We would like to thank the students and staff for their warm welcome and enthusiasm throughout the session. We look forward to continuing to support emerging talent and creating opportunities that inspire, inform and empower the construction professionals of tomorrow.
