The historic funicular Leas Lift in Folkestone, closed since 2017, is being brought back to life thanks to the hard work of the Folkestone Leas Lift Company Charity (FLLC). b&m are delighted to have been appointed by FLLC to provide QS services to the revival project.
The Grade II* lift, one of only three water balanced lifts left in the UK, was a draw for many tourists visiting the South East and had carried 36 million passengers, before the HSE deemed the Victorian braking system inadequate.
The FLLC have developed a robust business plan and community strategy which enabled them to secure a development grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Once complete, the FLLC will implement these long-term plans for its operation including the ability to once again take ticketed journeys from the Leas down to the seafront, as well as a new café all linking the lift to the coastal park, beach and a proposed public ‘Leas Lift’ square.
Work to the lift will see repair to the tracks, the tank room, sheave wheel, carriages and pump room which will bring the lift back into working order.
The lift will remain funicular in nature, continuing the focus on an exceptionally sustainable method of travel, with no on-site pollution and little carbon footprint. Once operational, people will once again be able to avoid the steep walk up to the Leas- an essential link between the Leas and the seafront, especially for those less able.
