The project.
The award winning Turner Contemporary has helped to kick start the regeneration of Margate. Offering a rolling programme of temporary exhibitions, the gallery offers fantastic space for those exhibiting and visiting and impressive views of the Kent coastline. The project was funded by Kent County Council, Arts Council England, the South East Development Agency and the Turner Contemporary Art Trust.
Designed by David Chipperfield Architects, the two storey gallery is situated prominently on Margate Seafront. It is located on the same site as the Cold Harbour guest house where namesake Turner stayed on trips to Margate. Constructed with a concrete frame and acid etched glass skin, careful consideration had to be given to the materials on the project due to the need for them to be robust and cope with the British seaside weather. The gallery is positioned on a plinth to protect it from high winds and the sea and features six identical interlocking north-facing rectangular blocks.
Upon walking to the gallery, you are greeted by a double height entrance hall window that captures the coastline and provides a wonderous welcome. The ground floor events space and cafe provide the Turner opportunity to host businesses and the local community and the shop provides a retail income for the Trust.
