The project.
A new 440 pupil primary school has been developed at Chilmington Green and serves those living at the nearby development of the same name. The school opened to new pupils in October 2021 and saw pupils and staff move from their temporary home at Jemmett Road.
This is the first of 4 primary schools to be delivered as part of the new garden suburb, that once complete, will see over 1,600 primary age pupils living there. Initially, the school will operate as a one-form entry school before expanding as the development grows.
The new school is located at the heart of the new suburb and adjacent the future community area, which will be delivered later in the overall development. The design for the school was developed with the community area in mind and once all elements are developed, will provide a cohesive and active community social space for all residents.
The new school building is two storey and facilitates two form entry from nursery through to Key Stage 2. There are 14 classrooms, a library, nurture room and large hall. Specialist provision is also provided for pupils with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
The new classroom environments have been designed to be child-centred and allow for flexibility, collaboration, and independence. The school’s main aim is to ‘shape their environments to better reflect a 21st century workspace that promotes social interaction, communication and self-regulation.’
Externally, large playground areas have been developed along with hard courts, a sports field wetland area and staff and visitor parking.
