Bromley Council have launched an appeal to raise funds for the restoration of the much loved ‘Bowie Bandstand’. The Grade II listed Edwardian bandstand, located in the Croydon Road Recreation Ground in Beckenham, is due to be restored. It will not only to become a tribute to the late star but also to enable it back into use for future music performances. David Bowie performed at the Beckenham Arts Lab Growth Summer Festival in 1969, held at the bandstand and is rumoured to have written a hit or two whilst there. The bandstand was erected in 1905 and is believed to be the only McCallum and Hope bandstand left in the UK.

Planning has been submitted for the restoration work, including refurbishment all of the ironwork and fencing. Supporters are now able to purchase an engraved brick which will then be inscribed with a short message. These will then be laid in a circular pathway around the bandstand to enhance and expand the performance space. b&m are delivering Quantity Surveying and Principal Designer services on the project, which will commence further once funds are raised and permission granted.

If you are interested in purchasing a brick, please visit Bromley Council’s website, where you can find out more and purchase online.
