The project.

Tonbridge Town Lock has undergone a major refurbishment, transforming tit into fully accessible open space for the whole community to enjoy.

The scheme was designed to include flood defence work as well as the construction of an attractive new boathouse for the use by the Environment Agency and other river users.

The project featured three main objectives – enhanced Urban Landscaping, flood control and telemetry monitoring. The Urban Landscaping creates a beautiful surrounding for all residents and visitors, the flood control provides further protection for more than over 100 properties in the surrounding area and the telemetry monitoring provides the EA with accurate river level reports on the water levels.

The latest telemetry monitoring system was installed giving the Environment Agency an insight into climatic conditions, providing early warning of flooding. This enables them to manage their environment more efficiently, allocate maintenance and rapid-response resources effectively and reduce their flood risk.

The project was funded by TMBC, the Environment Agency and through development contributions from local housing schemes.

‘As usual, we received a very professional and thorough service from the b&m team. It was a pleasure to work alongside them.”

Stuart Edwards; Property Services Officer - Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council
