Yesterday marked the start of the 14th Annual National Apprenticeship Week. The event, which runs all week, celebrates and showcases apprentices and highlights the work being done across the whole apprenticeship community. The theme for 2021 is ‘Build the Future’ and seeks to highlight how apprenticeships can aid in developing the skills and knowledge required for a successful career.
We’re very proud to support and promote Apprenticeships in the business and we currently have two Assistant Project Surveyors enrolled on the Chartered Surveyor Degree Apprenticeship programme.
The benefit of taking the Apprenticeship route into Quantity Surveying is the ability to ‘learn and earn’. Apprentices get the opportunity to apply construction and surveying theory to real live examples and be mentored along the way by their peers and colleagues. The apprenticeship also gives the Apprentice the ability to apply for their Chartered Surveyor status during the latter half of their Apprenticeship. This forms their ‘End Point Assessment’ and if they’re successful, they become MRICS accredited at the end of the apprenticeship.
George Malone and Lauren Gillmore are currently undertaking their Level 6 BSc Quantity Surveying degrees at London South Bank University and attend lectures and seminars one day a week.

George Malone, Assistant Project Surveyor
George joined B&M in 2016 at age 16 after completing a week’s work experience. Prior to joining us, he wasn’t sure on what route to take to a career in construction, but knew the industry was for him. He’d already undertaken work experience at a London-based Building Surveying consultancy and had completed a week with a contractor as a Quantity Surveyor and this solidified that he wanted to be a Surveyor.
On joining, we enrolled George at MidKent College and he completed a Level 3 Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment, followed by a HNC in Construction on a day release basis. Following successful completion of these, at age 21, George progressed onto University and enrolled on the Apprenticeship Chartered Surveyor course and thanks to his HNC, was able to enrol into Year 3 out of 5.
George enjoys the ability to learn on the job and the ability to apply what he has learnt in his education to the real world. His ability to have conversations with his fellow colleagues about their projects, challenges and successes helps to reinforce his own learning. George feels the Apprenticeship route has given him the chance to develop the skills he needs to progress and enjoying having a mentor he can work with to grow as a Surveyor. George’s goals are to get Chartered on completing his Apprenticeship Degree (one of the many benefits he likes!) and progress through B&M to Senior and Director level.
